The rate of vaccinations around the country has sunk to new lows in recent weeks, threatening President Joe Biden's goal of 70% of American adults with at least one dose by July 4. |
The CDC reported last week that 63% of adults had received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, only slightly up from the 62% the week before. Trends over the past week, based on data reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, show the U.S. vaccinations are on track to reach only 67% of adults by Independence Day, a USA TODAY analysis shows. |
The White House has already made plans to combat the slowdown. Biden announced a monthlong effort to encourage more Americans to roll up their sleeves. Many vaccination sites will be offering extended hours, and several national day care chains and hundreds of local YMCAs are offering free drop-in childcare for anyone needing to get a vaccine. Black-owned barbershops and salons are being urged to provide "Shots at the Shop." |
It's Monday, and this is the Coronavirus Watch from the USA TODAY Network. Here's more news you need to know: |
• | Growing evidence of the importance of vaccination: Dr. Jeff Duchin, the chief health officer for Seattle and King County, told The Seattle Times that 97% of recent COVID-19 cases there have occurred in unvaccinated people. | • | A report by the Pew Charitable Trusts said after an initial sharp drop in tax revenue, 29 states recovered to take in as much or more during the peak pandemic period of March 2020 through February 2021 than they did during the previous 12 months. | • | Moderna announced that it has requested authorization of its its COVID-19 vaccine in adolescents with Health Canada – and will file for emergency use authorization with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration "for this important, younger-age population." | • | Mississippi is last in the nation for fully vaccinated people. As of Friday afternoon, over 911,000 people were fully vaccinated in Mississippi or 29% of the population. | |
Today's numbers: The U.S. has more than 33.5 million confirmed coronavirus cases and 597,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University data. The global totals: Over 173 million cases and 3.7 million deaths. More than 135 million Americans have been fully vaccinated – 40.9% of the population, according to the CDC. |
